Fighting for My Life

author’s note:
In case you're wondering: the “noted astrophysicist” quoted in the poem below is Dr. Neil deGrausse Tyson...
To his credit, in the same speech, he stated: “We’re not only a part of the Universe, the Universe is also a part of us.”
FIGHTING FOR MY LIFE
A noted astrophysicist claims
The Universe wants to kill us
but I say he misinterprets
its cold monolithic hostility:
I say The Universe threatens
our survival so we can live
to the height of our ability--
after building these walls
we now desire freedom--
so confined
I struggle for breath
even with all this air
in my lungs--
I still hunger
even with all these foodstuffs
in my stomach--
so now I fight for release
from this fear in my heart...
I submit myself as proof:
The Universe wants us
to use all our courage--
the Universe wants us
to do more than merely survive.
