Outside Myself

author’s note:

“My work is loving the world.”
                          -- Mary Oliver

I enjoy myself
the most when
I forget myself
the most--when
I slide from these
lame clothes
and leave them
lying on the floor--

when I’ve had enough
of myself--bored with
these dusty thoughts--
when I finally unhook
from old habits and
coerce this idle skull
to wander outside.

Then something better
has a chance to breathe
life into my being--

when I speak my feet
on the playground of grass,
the unheard becomes
audible, becomes visible--

then I see all movement
is music and all music
a means of threading:

threading one star to another--
the threading is forging.

I work while I play.
