Common Reverence

author’s note:

“...inside human beings
    is where God learns.”
                   --   Rainer Maria Rilke

COMMON REVERENCE

I’ve knelt down
to file a file.

To look for
a small coin
in the weeds.

To pick up
a fallen leaf.

To tie
my irritating
shoe strings.

Again
and
again
I’ve knelt down.

As if by accident,
I have been obedient.
Reverential.

These may seem like
insignificant acts
but I’ve learned

that if I listen, really listen
when I stop
to kneel down

in my mundane lungs
I can feel the spirit
breathing.
