OUR MISTAKES ARE MINE

I only hope we live long enough
to benefit from
all of our mistakes--
           many of which
           are mine--I haven’t yet
made enough, yet enough
to warrant a footnote in a history book.

Our mistakes are mine.

My foot has caught
many a root--
           it’s the earth
trying to gain my awareness--
           it’s me
trying to wake myself up
by pulling myself down.

My mistakes are ours.

So I write of such mistakes
to contribute
what understanding I can.

But I’ll not always be
so humble--

--someday, someday--
I’ll list my valiantries
when I’ve separated them
from all my vanities.
