The Frog Tempts Me with a Wish

author's note:

If only the frog would say to me:

"You can bring up, clearly, any event--and the associated emotion--you wish to remember."

THE FROG TEMPTS ME WITH A WISH

Sometimes late at night...

a little frog in a tree
whispers to me:
I've come to answer your wish:
    you can erase anything
    you'd like to forget--!--

but what I'd wish is not
what I truly want:

I'd never will myself to forget
because then I'd have to give up
my keystone belief:

that every moment
has a purpose--

I'd have to give up
searching for the purpose
behind every event,
behind everything--!--

but how could I stop
my need to understand--?--

I'd have to give up my whole life.

Mighty Suns

author's note:

The flower above spoke to me...

It said: "Hey you--yeah you, knucklehead!  Down here!"
怀

MIGHTY SUNS

I came to this mountain
to find the almighty Sky God

hoping he might have lowered
down in the clouds surrounding
the peak...

but I became lost in the wet gray fog--
tired, disillusioned, I lowered
my eyes down to the ground

and there discovered
the flowers...

all their small faces: mighty suns.

The Charge of the Buck Private

author's note:

Love yourself.  Then forget it.  Then, love the world.
                               -- Mary Oliver

THE CHARGE OF THE BUCK PRIVATE

I must have been born
into the turmoil of this world
because I hate turmoil--

driven by this innate dislike, I fight
so hard to settle my many conflicts:

losing and losing and falling again

but struggling and standing and charging
regardless--

determined to end this war.

For a long time, I thought I fought
merely for my own peace of mind

but I've come to see how
I battle for the benefit of all

so now,
I feel ever stronger in my charge
because...

what better reason for being?

Collection

author's note:

My gift to acquaintances is to remember them.
怀

COLLECTION

I couldn't afford
too many of you

nor could many of you
afford me:

yes, I was expensive--
especially to myself:

after I'd paid that tab, I felt I had
just enough left over
to shake your hand
or exchange an appreciative
nod of the head.

But though I now regret
losing so many
investment opportunities...

to my good fortune
all those small gains
have added up
to a multitude
worth millions.
