author's note:

My gift to acquaintances is to remember them.

I couldn't afford
too many of you

nor could many of you
afford me:

yes, I was expensive--
especially to myself:

after I'd paid that tab, I felt I had
just enough left over
to shake your hand
or exchange an appreciative
nod of the head.

But though I now regret
losing so many
investment opportunities...

to my good fortune
all those small gains
have added up
to a multitude
worth millions.
