Mumbling About Our Great Life

author's note:

I recently received this comment from 'beverly hills cosmetic dentist': "after reading this remarkable paragraph I am too cheerful to share this knowledge here with colleagues".

I hope you are not too cheerful to share this poem with colleagues.

The key ingredient in alchemy
apparently, is time:

though this moment seems rather leaden
it may shine like gold in retrospect

but time can also diminish...

what I once saw as monumental
can often appear quite small
when considered from afar.

Can both realities be real?

All I can say for certain all has such weight--

when I stop trying to judge
and allow myself to feel--to feel it all, all at once:
the present, the past--the future, even

what comes to me then
becomes much too much
for me to express...

the best I can do
is to mumble
to you
this assurance:

we are all living
something truly great.

Obeying a Forgotten Dream

author's note:

A few years ago, I was involved in this discussion: can one dance to jazz?

I say: we can dance to whatever we please.

This morning in the mirror
I wondered:

did my hair do a dance
in the night while I slept--?--

I couldn't recall--I only knew
I needed to flatten its cacophony
back down
before I could go on

but even at noon
I could still feel the afterglow
of a rollicking midnight party
throughout my body--

all afternoon, I hummed,
I mused--
trying to conjure a lyric
to express that rousing tune

until finally, I gave up--I gave in

and begin to spin
to shake, to clap
to shout, to laugh

as my hair rose
with the ecstasy
and every strand
did its wild dance.
