Firelight
author’s note:
What if we have to work just as hard after death?
FIRELIGHT
I believed
I’d suddenly see the purpose
of my life after I died.
But even from this new perspective
I’m still struggling to understand
why I needed to live that madness.
But when I feel
you light a candle in my memory
I realize once again:
in that life I was a flame stubbornly burning.
At such times
I look at your side from my side
and see a dark mountain
wrapped in a long chain
made of many many small flames—
a spiral of light
winding from base to peak—
a marvel of candles
burning stubbornly in the night.
In those moments
I stop wondering
What's it all for?
and instead
sing of how I love
our amazing firelight.
